Empathy Events X Choosing Up Book Launch

A FEW WORDS FROM ILANA...

I remember the morning a few years ago when I excitedly sat down at my kitchen table to write the first of what would turn out to be a weekly email that would eventually become the basis for Choosing Up.  As I opened my heart and let people into my search for meaning in the everyday, I was surprised to find that they were actually listening. My modest list gradually doubled, tripled, and more than quadrupled in size, and it occurred to me that, like me, people were searching for something more.
Choosing Up invites you to spiritually reframe your life using Torah as your guide. It is a practice in finding stories of hope with the purpose of bringing more wholeness to our lives and to the world.  While you can approach the book simply as a good read, I encourage you to use it as a springboard for your own inquiry into the relevance of Jewish wisdom, and even as a template to write your own stories (I’ll show you how in the book).
Ready to join me on the journey? I’ll see you out there!
A portion of the proceeds from Choosing Up go to The Village Shul, Toronto.

#TheEmpathyEffect #EmpathyEmpire #ChoosingUp

In the spirit of spreading empathy, we are suggesting those attending Ilana’s book signing make a $5 donation via The Empathy Effect, a registered national nonprofit organization. 100% of the proceeds will be used to purchase Ilana’a book for individuals with limited financial resources. Because everyone, regardless of economics, should be able to Choose Up.

Empathy Jewellery will be arriving in a few weeks!

Meet Ilana Kendal

About the author of  Choosing Up Meet Ilana Kendal! If you took a snapshot of my night table, you’d find a skyscraper stack of books and magazines likely to include the latest pop neuroscience hit, a classical commentary on the weekly Torah portion, a deliciously illustrated cookbook, and, as of more recently, Goodnight Moon. So yes, I’m a voracious reader. But whatever I’m doing—reading, running on the trail, singing the Wheels on the Bus to my baby, shopping with my teenager, scouring psychology research papers, or making my way through the seemingly self-generating heap of laundry—I’m ALSO mining Jewish wisdom for its relevance to life. I believe PASSIONATELY that - every challenge is a well-disguised opportunity for growth - change and transformation are possible - the Torah is here to guide us through life’s many plot twists I don’t shy away from the raw experiences that make us all human. In fact, that’s where I believe the magic happens.

The Empathy Effect

About The Empathy Effect: What started as a humble social experiment snowballed into a social movement with over 213,000 followers on Facebook alone. Over the course of 365 days, 6 days a week, artist Kim Smiley posted a true story and photograph about someone transforming the world through stepping into another person's shoes. Established as a nonprofit in 2017, the goal of The Empathy Effect is to inspire loving-kindness in public and private life -- at home, school, work and in the world. Start with a simple step: sign up for an #EmpathyPledge pin and promise to practice one act of empathy every day. Our vision is to create an Empathy Empire, one heart and soul at a time.
